"I've watched only a few anime shows in my lifetime, traditionally sticking to the classics (e.g., Akira) at the recommendations of my friends. Tenchi showed up after I tried a few other recommendations such as Ghost in the Shell and Demon City Shinjuku (neither of which got me excited, except that Ghost in the Shell had nice visuals).Suffice it to say that this anime has so won over my heart that, in a time when I'm trying to stay conservative financially, I have already bought the special edition OVA set and all three of the Tenchi movies and am committed to buying all of the TV series episodes to boot (for those like me who didn't know, OVA stands for "original video animation", and means it was a straight to video production). You will feel the same after watching this series as you did when you finished reading the Lord of the Rings for the first time -- you are entranced by the world...you will miss the characters like you do real people, because they are so expressive and genuine, and you'll want to go back and visit them.Tips:1. You definitely want to watch with the original Japanese voice track. I have watched with both English and Japanese and though the English translation was faithful to the meaning, the emotion of the characters isn't communicated like it is in the Japanese...also, the voice casting was just RIGHT. Can't really explain it in words...2. Watch on a high quality home theater system...this thing will stress every part of the system, every disk has very high quality soundtracks and incredible colors (both the wild and the mild -- beautiful soft cherry blossoms in the foreground with a neon orange slashing death duel in the background...).3. There is some mild nudity in this series - parts are not appropriate for kids (or at least they'll be somewhat confused) which is a real shame because some of the characters (Ryo-ohki, Sasami, and Misaki) are soooo perfect for the little ones. Now if I could only figure out who is more alluring...Ryoko or Washu?"

"It is impossible to put fully into words what Pioneer has done with this unbelievable (and totally complete) box set. Basically, they have taken an all-time favorite anime .. given it a digital remastering, along with Dolby 5.1 Japanese tracks (subtitled wonderfully I might add), along with a great job on the English dubbing, all 13 OVA Episodes, an interactive encyclopedia for Tenchi Fanatics and an unbeatable price. The animation is beautiful in the DVD format and extremely clear, which brings vibrant new life into this anime classic. Pretty much I would recommend this to any anime fan who hasn't seen the series yet (you really have no idea what you're missing out on!) or any Tenchi fan who would like to see this series in its ideal format. If you are new to the anime DVD scene like I am, make sure you put this set on your list of "to buy" collections ^_^ You won't be disapointed!"
Now this is what I call animation.

"Tenchi is the story of a teenage boy who has his life turned up side down by a group of alien women. These alien women all fall in love with and eventually end up living with him in the same house some where in the country. The main players in the series are a five thousand year old space pirate named Ryoko, the crown princess of the planet Jurai named Ayeka and her little sister Sasami, the universes most brilliant mad scientist named Washu, and a galaxy police officer named Mihoshi. As if that's not bad enough things get worse for poor Tenchi when his grandfather Kashuhito reveal secrets about his past and origin. Thenchi is one of those series where the character development and animation are executed so well that you forget you are watching an animated series. The characters are very likeable and seem to actually have real lives and emotions. This 3 disk box set contain 13 episode of high quality animation on 2 disks. The two disks with the episodes on them are presented in THX. The original japanese audio is presented in 5.1 digital. The english audio is presented in 2.0 digital. The english audio is very good. Not only are the english actors actually good but even the theme songs are dubbed in english on the dubbed track. Disk 3 contains the Tenchi encyclopedia v3.0. The Tenchi encyclopedia contains interviews, video trailers, concept drawings, character bios, and much more. This box set contains medium violence, nudity, and sexually suggestive situations."

"This DVD set collects the excellent 1st and 2nd TENCHI MUYO! OAVs.For those who watched TENCHI on Caroon Network you may not want to buy this. This collects the series in it's original, unedited form. Nudity, risque talk, naughty touch, and lots of Saki pop up throughout. Not to mention Nurse Washu in it's entirety. Which alone is worth the price of this set.For those left, this is one of the best anime series of all time. The animation is top-quality. The best seen anywhere. The characters are funny and they do actually have depth and progress as the series plays out. Something practically unheard of in American animation. While a comedy their are serious and dramtic moments. This is the story of Tenchi, a curious teenage boy, who one summer sneaks into a cave against his grandfathers wishes. What happenes next is a chain of events involving a mummified space pirate, a loney princess, a clutzy space officer, and a thousand year old genius in a child's body living with and longing after Tenchi.Their's lots of secrets to be learned about all the characters.
Not all the secrets. This series ends with room for a 3rd OAV which should be coming out this year.So if you love anime, space adventures, love-triangles, and sexual humor this series is for you."

"SEVEN... STRAIGHT... HOURS... of UNCUT... UNCENSORED... Tenchi Muyo will permanently warp your mind. You will think about the characters, you will love the characters, you will nod off and BECOME the characters (Not to mention finally be able to understand all that "fan fiction" literature littering the webrings). Where the Cartoon Network::Toonami (The only network to my knowledge still showing the series) versions were so horribly butchered it was, at times, difficult to sympathize with some of the trials each character experienced because such critical information was left out because of [cough] "cultural differences" [cough]. So be warned, this IS NOT the Toonami versions of the episodes nor is it possible to see them from these (3) discs.Video is crisp, although you'd be better doing proper justice to this powerful series by utilizing your S-Video output for maximum quality. Without, quality is still bleeding edge OUTSTANDING though some minute (I mean REALLY insignificant) scanlining will be visible on larger CRT televisions when viewed from less than a meter away. This will definitly make you cringe if you watched Tenchi Muyo on these absolutely golden discs and then watched a regular cable signal. You WILL notice a difference. Color is vibrant and the pallette is very diverse. Some minor aliasing may be noticeable if you are too close to your set or the TV is too small to begin with.Sound is nothing short of tear jerking magic. The Japanese audio track is razor sharp, coming at you at nothing less than 5.1 channels. English track comes through only 2.0 (Dolby Stereo?) channels and some dialogue can seem weak given the underlying emotion. The musical score for both however is, hoping to not become too cliche here, outstanding. The package itself features a plastic coated double-height box unfolding to reveal three individual discs, the first containing episodes 1-7 (including "The Night Before the Carnival" which will probably never be shown on national TV in the States), the second, episodes 8-13 (including "Here Comes Jurai Part II", completely cut from the Toonami version for both "cultural differences" and the need for "Here Comes Jurai" to fit in a one-hour time slot, just watch "Here Comes Jurai" throughout and then 'Part II' will come after the credits) and the third disc, the holy-but-brief Tenchi Encyclopedia Ver 3.0 featuring video clips, character bios, pencil tests, design sketches, and three other sections for Misc. Tenchi bits from Japan, a "Sneak Peek" section for Tenchi Muyo in Love 2 ("Tenchi Forever"), and the third, an art section featuring image galleries and the original English comics (Don't even bother squinting to read the captions without your S-Video port or a REALLY high-rez monitor). This unfolding case comes in a protective outer transparent plastic case outlining "Tenchi Muyo" on the front cover and "Tenchi-Muyo" in Kanji on the back cover of the unfolding box.Whether you only give a rat's backside or are destructively obsessed with the Tenchi Muyo series, you would best honor the memory of this timeless series by BUYING THIS NOW.HIGHS: -"420 Minutes" of Tenchi Muyo, uncut, uncensored, spanned across two discs -Tenchi Muyo Encyclopedia v 3.0 -Bleeding-edge of, razor sharp sound and videoLOWS: -Minute scanlining on video without S-Video jack -English dialogue noticeably faint where drama could be emphasized by actual yelling or crying out -Comics too low-rez to read captions -Some more conservative audiences may not be able to accept Japan's concept of "casual nudity" and may dismiss the entire series as "hentai" after viewing a few scenesBOTTOM LINE: Get cash, use credit card, buy from Amazon.com, smile freely.
