Movie Reviews

Opportunistic Marketing
12/17/1999
(1 out of 5 stars)

"This is a fine example of opportunistic marketing. I knew before purchasing this that it wasn't the Spielberg movie. I also knew that the Spielberg movie was based on the story of the Niland brothers'. I expected "The True Story of Private Ryan" to be the true story of the real "Private Ryan", i.e. Private Niland. Instead, what I receive is a 50 minute recounting of WW II by an English tank crew member (whose name just happens to be Jim Ryan) that has nothing to do with the Niland brothers. What is more, this documentary is like a cat chow commercial in that it continually re-runs WWII footage and stills throughout. Also, the sound of Ryan's voice is obviously over-dubbed and doesn't match his moving lips, much like a Japanese Karate flick. To sum up, this was a tasteless marketing ploy to make money by misleading those interested in knowing more about the Niland brothers. Unless you're interested in a particular Englishman's experience of WWII, this is one to avoid. I want my money back."
Don't Waste Your Money
05/27/2000
(1 out of 5 stars)

"This would have to be one of the worst DVD out. I knew it had nothing to do with "Saving Private Ryan", but a more boring documentary I don't think they could have made. To make matters worse the mongrels who made this didn't even have the courtesy of allowing Mr. Ryan tell his story in his own voice, instead they got some toff half pretending to put on a regional accent dub old Mr. Ryan's dialogue. Do yourself a favour, save your money and DON'T buy this! forget the star rating, I'm giving this NO STARS."
