One night in early 20th-century New York, master thief Peter Lake (Colin Farrell) breaks into a Central Park mansion -- and quickly has his heart stolen by its occupant, Beverly Penn (Jessica Brown Findlay). Unfortunately, their love is star-crossed; she is dying from consumption, and he is marked for death by his demonic former mentor, Pearly Soames (Russell Crowe). Peter battles the forces of time and darkness to save Beverly, even as Pearly does everything in his power to defeat Peter.

Winter's Tale is a romantic film with loose religious themes and heavy emphasis on a fairy tale hallmarks (winged horses, angels and demons, miracles, etc). Some aspects of the script seem ridiculous unless viewed through the same prism as childhood stories. The setting takes place mostly in the early 1900s and then again in current day. Farrell's modern haircut is probably the most off-putting aspect of the film - it's completely out of place for the period and hard to ignore when it's constantly hanging in his face throughout the movie. Some action parts were really frustrating for someone who likes action movies because the characters seem to stand stupidly by while urgent matters need to be handled. Alas, this movie is not targeted at that demographic, so it need not be judged too harshly on that account. In any event, the movie has a positive message and there are moments where the film gets in the neighborhood of "Somewhere In Time" with Christopher Reeve, as the Romantic leads are destined to be together throughout time. Overall, this is a great movie for a niche audience, other niches will be less enamored with it.

Really good love/sify movie with a really good cast of Colin Farrell, Russell Crowe, William Hurt, and Michael Crane.
