Agent Aika - Final Battle
Agent Aika - Final Battle (2001)
Actor: Katsuhiko Nishijima
Release Year: 2001
Date: 10/25/2010 3:05 ET

This one is for the guys! Guns, battles & enough fan service to make this a favorite. Aika & her crew are in the final showdown with bullets, rockets & panties flying. You have never seen so much lingerie in 1 anime series before. Volume 3 is the perfect ending to the series.

All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku Dash! - The Complete Collection (2005)

Release Year: 2005

Another retelling of the Nuku Nuku series. This one however, doesn't match up to its older siblings. A lot of the comedy is gone & has been replaced with romance between Ryunoske, now a 14 year old & Atsuko, also known as Nuku Nuku. Ryunoske's dad, Kyusaku is no longer Nuku Nuku's creator but, simply a scientist trying to discover the cat androbot's secrets. Having seen the original & the TV series, I was bias I guess. I was expecting an action comedy & got an action romance instead.

Actors: Jessica Boone, Shelley Calene-Black, Luci Christian
Release Year: 2005

This is the good stuff. All the zaniness of the original is here. Nuku Nuku goes to school & meets every sterotypical student (the jock, the honor student, the otaku, etc.) in 1 class, hers! In this retelling, Akiko, Ryunosuke's mom has been downgraded from president of her father's company to an executive/right-hand woman of the company's president. Since the company president also runs an evil organization, the weirdness factor is upped in this storyline.

If you love any of Leiji Matsumoto's series, you gotta check this one out. Just about every one of Matsumoto-san's beloved characters makes a cameo. Duty, honor & respect are the main themes in this space drama about Warrius Zero, disgraced Earth Federation captain & pirate Captain Harlock. The trials & stuggles of Zero & his crew will keep you glued to the tube for hours.

Desert Punk: Box Set (Viridian Collection) (2008)
Release Year: 2008

With its sexual language, swearing & lewd behavior, this anime is NOT for the kiddies. That said, what "Desert Punk" is - is a randy sex/action comedy that will have you laughing out loud. Don't look for dry humor or witty banter. Just loads of fan service, toilet jokes & childish gags. However, I do think Funimation went overboard with profanity & breast nicknames in the dubbed version. Many will find the subtitled version more subdued but, just as funny.

Kanta Mizuno aka "The Desert Punk" is a true anti-hero. A selfish, rude, crafty, amoral pervert who's the best handyman in the Great Kanto Desert (what left of the Kanto Plain after global warming & war destroy the Earth). By his side is Kosuna, his pupil. At 14, she is already a skilled sniper however, as the Punk has told her skills alone are worth nothing. As master teaches his apprentice the trick of the trade, the duo run with & against such people as Junko "Vixen of the Sands", "Repo Man of Souls" RainSpider & the "Machine Gun" Brothers.

I just can't give this anime a fair review as I've never read the manga it's based on. Of course, I can say it's very beautifully drawn. Everything has a kind of dreamy quality to it. There are the pretty boys so a little boy's love is shown but, nothing of any consideration. Sadly, if you haven't read the manga, watching the anime is confusing. Lots of flashback try to help the viewer along & there is a character booklet included to help one catch up on the story to date.

Gate Keepers: To The Rescue! (Vol. 5) (Signature Series) (2004)
Release Year: 2004
Date: 11/15/2010 9:21 ET

Gate Keepers is a cool series as long as you don't go into it with the idea that it's the next Neon Genesis. It's far more light hearted. While the teens do have angst & no great surprise there, you don't really leave the series thinking about life's big questions. Entertaining? Yes. Thought provoking? Sorry. Should you rent/own it? Sure!

Ah! The fan service volume! You guessed it. Girls in bathing suit. Action, romance, the standard fare. While this is not Evangelion, it's not a bad series to watch. It will keep your interest.

This is very good for young viewers of anime. The villians are more laughable than scary. The heroes are all brave, even the comic relief one. No blood or deaths. The fight scenes are entaining enough to keep children's interest while safe enough that parents need not worry.

Maze TV Series - Anime Test Drive
Maze TV Series - Anime Test Drive (2003)
Release Year: 2003
Date: 12/13/2010 2:00 ET

The Anime Test Drive were not a bad way to introduce a series. Especially, when the box sets & series collections costs so much back in the day. Of course, now they don't even have samplers anymore. T.T But, I digress.

Maze, from the Slayers team, does have a lot of the same feeling however, the zaniness is sorta off kilter. Not to mention, it trys WAY too hard to be cute. The damsel-in-distress princess is so over-the-top sweet, you'll get a toothache. The hero/heroine Maze is either a confused girl who you really can't feel for by day or a sex-crazed lout you don't care for by night. It's like Ranma 1/2 meets The Slayers.

Sadly, the music is usually what this anime is known for. For anyone who lived thru the 80s, this story will make you smile while remembering the styles of that time. I myself, had a few flashback however, that doesn't make up for a plot that starts strong only to lag at the end. Volume 1 will grab you with a fast paced, slick story. Volume 2 is a bit of a disappointment when we catch up with the main characters Shogo & Yui, now no longer teens but, lackluster adults. Volume 3 reveals the mystery of Eve Tokimatsuri if you even care by this time because the story has spun off in another direction.

Sonic Soldier Borgman - Last Battle/Lover's Rain (2004)
Release Year: 2004

Wish I could give this a higher rating however, not seeing Sonic Soldier Borgman the series, I was kinda lost. If you've seen the series (unlikely, unless you were in Japan when it aired), you know the characters & what's going on. As it has not been released in the US(to my knowledge), most of us will be lost to story behind these 2 stand alone OVAs.

This story is full of twists & turns. Nobody is really the villain. The characters in the story are just acting as their DNA or hearts tell them. There's romance, drama, action & horror as no one is exactly as they appear.
