reasonably good prequel to Alien, done 30-35 years after. Attempts to fill in some of the unswered questions from the original. Worth it if you liked the original Alien, which I do

If you love the Alien series, this is a prequel that attempts to explain. Not much new though. Pieces and parts of the other movies.

I had hoped that this installment of the aliens franchise would be a return to form after the disappointments of alien 3 and 4, but such is not the case. Not that I expected to see a bunch of aliens, acid, etc. - I knew going in that this was meant to be sort of a standalone effort by Scott. But I guess that's exactly what I don't understand about this misguided effort . . . why so many clichés? Yet again we have a quirky synthetic, a sleeper ship, an alien inside the female lead, the company (wo)man that you can't trust, and so on. What's so new about this vision of the Alien universe? The actions of the characters seemed motivated by the needs of advancing the storyline rather than being true to the character's motivations themselves. Overall the plot was very contrived and predictable - especially if you have seen the other Aliens movies. CGI and all that was very good, but it simply can't compensate for the ridiculous Cthulhu-esque alien at the end of the movie. It seemed as though the writers probably tried to create a thinking person's backstory in there somewhere, but it ends up getting lost behind all the dopey stuff the characters do in the story.

Next time, park right outside the structure and you won't have to travel so far to rescue anyone . . .
