This version of Flash Gordon channels the campy dialogue and corny sci-fi action of the 1980 classic - there's even a guest appearance by Sam J Jones in one episode! I had fun watching this, but I'm also a big fan of the aforementioned movie and the animated Saturday cartoon - I'm not sure if non-fans or the uninitiated will find this series as entertaining. There are a number of easter eggs that will make Gordon fans grin, and the interplay of the characters is consistent with Gordon lore. Warp gates between Mongo and Earth are the main plot device that allows the mostly self-contained episodes to take place on both worlds. Seeing the interpretation of each race of Mongo revealed slowly over time kept things interesting. The episodes follow a loose plot that leads to a two-part finale where Ming is deposed. The biggest drawback to the series is Ming himself, who doesn't seem Merciless enough (although sometimes will surprise you) - but I'm not sure they could ever cast anyone better than Max Von Sydow anyway, so the actor was probably doomed in the role. I would have given it 5 stars if the Queen soundtrack could have been procured, but the budget is pretty limited to lower quality CG and lens filters. I know this series has gotten some bad reviews, but I do think that the creators tried to keep true to Flash's two-fisted, no-guns style of saving the universe.
