Movie Reviews

Primarily 1950s 'Famous Studios' Popeye animations
Annie Van Auken | Planet Earth | 04/03/2008
(4 out of 5 stars)

"All but one of the 14 shorts on DIRECT SOURCE's POPEYE THE SAILOR were produced by FAMOUS STUDIOS (Paramount's cartoon division). The sole FLEISCHER-made title here, "Aladdin and His Wonderful Lamp," a 21 minute in-color special release, has Popeye uttering the legendary words, "I don't know what to say... I've never made love in Technicolor before."

TOP TEN FORGOTTEN CARTOONS (from GTV) features the magnificently hued and animated "It's Spring" (directed by William Hanna), plus several more unusual shorts.

CONTENTS of "Popeye the Sailor" (includes synopses)--

FRIGHT TO THE FINISH (1954) - Bluto plays mean tricks on Popeye and tries to scare Olive on Halloween.

THE CRYSTAL BRAWL (1957) - A disguised-as-a-fortuneteller Popeye scares Olive away from Bluto when he predicts her future.

I DON'T SCARE (1956) - Bluto changes the calendar to Friday the 13th so superstitious Olive won't go out with Popeye.

FLOOR FLUSHER (1954) - Popeye repairs Olive's leaky faucet until Bluto sabotages the pipes.

ANCIENT FISTORY (1953) - Popeye (as Cinderella) is transformed by a Fairy Godmother. He pursues and wins Princess Olive from Bluto.

ALADDIN AND HIS WONDERFUL LAMP (1939) [fl] - Olive dreams that Popeye is Aladdin. His magic lamp transforms Popeye into a prince

BRIDE AND GLOOM (1954) - Bride-to-be Olive gets cold feet after some nightmares of a future with Popeye.

ASSAULT AND FLATTERY (1956) - Judge Wimpy watches scenes from earlier shorts to determine if Popeye is guilty of beating Bluto up.

BIG BAD SINDBAD (1952) - Popeye and nephews see a Sindbad statue in a museum. Popeye tells the boys of his battle with Sindbad, the evil pirate.

COOKIN' WITH GAGS (1955) - Bluto goes too far with his April Fool's jokes.

PATRIOTIC POPEYE (1957) - Popeye takes away his nephews' 4th of July fireworks and they scheme to get them back.

PARLEZ VOUS WOO (1956) - Bluto adopts a fake French accent to lure Olive from Popeye.

OUT TO PUNCH (1956) - Bluto tries derailing Popeye's training regimen for their big boxing match.

NEARLYWEDS (1957) - Popeye and Olive's wedding plans are ruined when he shows up at the ceremony wearing a barrel."
A good buy

"Not a great quality DVD, but it keeps my daughter busy for an hour or so, so I give it 4 stars..."
