Movie Reviews

Slam Dunk vol. 2
Simone | USA | 07/02/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"6) Rukawa vs Akagi: The Real showdown!
7) Hanamichi's debut! Dunk Attack
8) Hanamichi's crisis! The Judo man's snare
9) I will play basketball!
10) The beginner's shot...is hard.

Since joining the Shohoku basketball team the team manager Ayako has been spending a great deal of time and energy with Sakuragi to teach him the basics of basketball. Naturally the hot headed Sakuragi is frustrated at having to be separated from the rest of team to learn the basics because he is unable to do anything to impress Haruko who attends all the basketball practices for love of the game, to support her older brother, and to ogle over Rukawa.

Coach Anzai decides to have the team (minus Sakuragi who is still learning the basics) play a practice game together that pits the freshmen against the seniors. This of course means, that the real showdown is between the two best players', which happen to be Captain Akagi and freshmen Rukawa. Sakuragi finds himself cheering for Captain Akagi because he doesn't want Rukawa to be able to do anything that will amaze Haruko. To the anger of Sakuragi, Rukawa does exactly what he doesn't want him to do so Sakuragi convinces the others to let him get involved in the game. Even though Sakuragi and Rukawa are supposed to be working together as a team to beat the seniors Sakuragi ends up playing against Rukawa.

Episodes 8-9 deal with Captain Akagi's childhood friend a guy named Aota who just happens to be Akagi's rival trying to get Sakuragi to quit the basketball team and join the Judo club. Aota thinks that Sakuragi would be better suited for Judo since he's always getting into fights and can fight very well and sets out to do whatever it takes to get Sakuragi to join.

Episode 10 Thanks to Sakuragi this is the funniest episode on volume 2. I don't want to ruin it for anyone so I won't write anymore on this episode.

Overall, Slam Dunk continues to be a very likable show. This volume allows the viewer to see exactly how Sakuragi feels about basketball. Plus the characters, especially Sakuragi and his antics are interesting enough to keep this show from being just another anime."
