Movie Reviews

Excellent - Clear & Precise ( Congas & Timbales)
Naoise O'hannain | Dublin, Ireland - Europa | 05/16/2006
(4 out of 5 stars)

"With Raul Perazzo (Congas), Karl Perrazo (Timbales), with excerpts of Santana concerts and on piano Rebeca Mauleon (of the salsa band reference fame) .
For 'comfortable' Improvers to Intermediate to beginning Advanced levels. It covers both Congas and Timbales. It has something for every one.
It covers on Congas (Tumbao, Mambo, Guajira, 6/8 Bembe, Rumba Columbia 4/4 - 2 Drum, Guaganco-3Drum) and
Timbales (Cha Cha, Guajira, 6/8, Rumba-Palitos and Palito Guaganco).
It shows each pattern clearly on Congas and Timbales, then Play along and live concert interpretations of the same patterns.
For the beginning Advanced, it show 3 different sets/mixes of patterns and some Rock fusion.
It also shows some studio examples of Soloing (Congas and Timbales) and then live concert excerpts of the Soloing.
To be honest with Rock in it's title, I was not expecting much, this instructional DVD has well EXCEEDED my expectations.
Why not 5* ? - no pamphlet of the dots/sheet music, no continuous play loop capability in the play along section, and it is not multiregional. Why not make all instructional videos multi-region! These items would then give it a '5*' .
The additional excerpt from 'Another Day in the Park' showing the young ? ''El Negro Hernandez' and others was a special bonus.
I would also recommend, for beginners try Ricardo Monzon's DVD 'Basic Afro Cuban Rhythms'[Berklee Music]ASIN: B00008G90P
and for improvers 'The Rythmic construction of a salsa tune' with Pablo Chino Nunez[WB]ISBN:0757915558.
Excellent - a thanks to all, WELL WORTH THE MONEY- 'Go raibh mile maith agaibh' (muchisimas gracias en Gaelic).

"I am learning by my self, and I bougth this DVD specting a very precise teaching, but...it is to complex to understand what they are talking about,no technique tips, nothing! What's the point to make this DVD only to show how much they know about afrocuban rithms? Anyway, they don't teach the basic of each instrument. Waste of money."
