Movie Reviews

For die-hard Saint fans only

(3 out of 5 stars)

"Lessons Not Well Learned is a follow-up to Armored Saint's first video A Trip Thru Red Times. Lessons Not Well Learned focuses on the band's career from 1991-2001, which pretty much limits it to material from the Symbol of Salvation and Revelation albums - not that there's anything wrong with that.

The main program:
The DVD features several live performances from 1991-2001, all of which appear to be shot at small clubs. Both the sound and video quality of these performances is fairly poor, as if it were an audience-shot bootleg recording. The camera is always fixed, so there's never really any variety of shots or even an occasional close-up. It's disappointing, because you'd think there would be some decent footage out there, particularly from the Symbol of Salvation era.

The bonus material:
Fortunately the bonus material makes up for the main program's shortfalls. In addition to the videos for "Last Train Home" and "Reign of Fire" there is a video montage for "Symbol of Salvation", some blooper reels, behind the scenes footage, and a short promotional video the band put together to support the Symbol of Salvation. The SoS promo video is pretty cheesy, and is highlighted by the band piling into what has to be somebody's mom's station wagon to go shoot pool. Ah, the glamorous rock & roll lifestyle.
The best bonus feature of all is a separate audio CD that features a 6-song live performance from 1984. It doesn't really fit the theme of the DVD, but the sound quality of the audio is excellent, and the band was in top form that night. This disc alone should make the DVD worthwhile for serious Armored Saint fans.

The verdict:
Lessons Not Well Learned is interesting, but uneven and unprofessional. I'd recommend it to die-hard Armored Saint fans only.

The track listing for the live EP is as follows:

1. Envy
2. Glory Hunter
3. False Alarm
4. Can U Deliver
5. Lesson Well Learned
6. Madhouse
