Movie Reviews

A must have DVD for your collection!!!!!!!

"For a while PBS was broadcasting Barbara, but they stopped. I became hooked after watching this show after a couple of episodes.

The main character is Barbara (Gwen Taylor). She sets the rules for the whole household and drives her family, friends and others stark raving mad. A simple plot which is engaging and entertaining.

It just makes me think that a simple, clever and witty show is so rare in the sea of realty TV shows.

Update:
This show ran from 1995-2003... I would like to know when the rest of the episodes are to be released. It is a shame that they only released 9 episodes while many of the other British comedies have been or are going to be completely released."
Hilarious addition to your Britcom library

"This family comedy set in Yorkshire will keep you laughing. Terrific cast memebers deliver witty dialogue and one-liners. If you love Britcoms the way I do, you'll welcome this series into your DVD library."
Description is confusing?

"Is the description correct? 3 disks with only 216 minutes? Also $44.99 for only 216 minutes?"
A great Britcom

"Barbara Liversidge (played by Gwen Taylor) is queen of all she sees...well, sort of...well, she acts like one anyway. But, things just never seem to turn out as she expects. Surrounded by her bumbling husband (Sam Kelly), party-animal son (Benedict Sandiford), independent-minded daughter (Elizabeth Carling), incompetent son-in-law (Mark Benton), struggling-to-stay-young sister (Sherrie Hewson), and easily-misled coworker (Madge Hindle), things always go wrong in strange and hilarious ways.

This is a great Britcom, one that my wife and I enjoy immensely. The characters do a great job of bringing their characters to life. I must admit, I find Sherrie Hewson's Jean an absolutely hilarious character - her antics never stop cracking me up.

This DVD collection contains three disks, each with three 24-minute episodes. The nine episodes are mostly drawn from the second (2000) season, while two are from the third (2001) season. I don't know why it's not simply the entire second season, or why the first and fourth seasons aren't represented, but somebody somewhere must know why. But, nonetheless, it's a hilarious show, and well worth the purchase price.

Incase you are interested the nine episodes are:
Kids - season 2, episode 1 - Everything's up for grabs when son-in-law Martin loses his job, when son Neil gets hooked up with a girl that's more of a bloke than he is, and when husband Ted decides that he's going to spice up his life by going skydiving. Just what is Barbara to do? Well, keep her feet on the ground for one thing!

Massage - season 2, episode 2 - When Barbara hurts her back, Ted brings in help (God help Barbara!), daughter Linda decides that Martin is having an affair, and Barbara's sister Jean becomes hooked on steroids. (The best part of this one is what the Boy Scouts do to Barbara's front hedge!)

Christening - season 2, episode 4 - It's time for Martin and Linda's baby to be christened, but everything begins to go wrong - Barbara should never have gone to Jean's hairdresser!

Tyres - season 2, episode 5 - Barbara's big mouth finally costs her her job and its really hard to find a new job, Ted is trying to prepare for an appearance on a game show, and Barbara causes further troubles when she slashes the tyres of a man who should not have handicap plates...um.

Fox - season 2, episode 6 - Ted finally gets to live his dream of being a football mascot, Jean's husband Phil loses control of his temper, and Barbara demands to become her grandson's babysitter.

Sheep - season 2, episode 10 - Neil finally decides to leave home but where will he go, Martin becomes tired of being a laughingstock, and Ted starts having nightmares.

Mate - season 2, episode 8 - Ted finds a new friend who decides to move in, Martin takes in his bosses (aggressive) dog, and Doreen becomes a party-animal!

Quennie - season 3, episode 1 - Barbara's mother-in-law moves in (why does she believe that Barbara is out to kill her?), Neil's new girlfriend is already marching him down the aisle to the altar, and Jean gets mistaken for a transvestite!

Flood - season 3, episode 2 - Ted wants to move but can you sell a house during a flood?"
