Movie Reviews

Nothing to do with Kong
Walter Five | 13th Floor Elevator, Enron Hubbard Bldg. Houston T | 02/10/2010
(3 out of 5 stars)

"Mistitled, this cheapie 2 DVD (one two-sided) set slaps together 11 Hollywood B-Films that have one thing in common, a man in a monkey suit. Some are Great White Hunter genre films, some are comedies, three star Bela Lugosi, one stars Boris Karloff, one Buster (Buck Rodgers)Crabbe. Some are classic "Bad Film". 11 movies, 12 hours. The films are:
The Gorilla (Bela Lugosi & The Ritz Brothers in an entertaining Comedy-Murder Mystery cheapie)
Law Of The Jungle (co-stars Arline Judge, and Mantan Moreland, better known for his role as Birmingham Brown in the Charlie Chan movies)
The Savage Girl (a cut-rate 1932 female Tarzan)
Kong Island/a.k.a. Eve, The Wild Woman (Italian exploitation cheapie with all the sexy parts edited out)
White Pongo (classic bad film)
The White Gorilla (1942 Great White Hunter cheapie with half of its footage from a 1927 silent jungle/animal film)
Nabonga Gorilla (actually a superior B-Movie starring Buster Crabbe, Barton MacLane, Crash Corrigan and his gorilla suit and the luscious Julie London in her first motion picture)
Bride of the Gorilla (Curt Siodmak (Director: The Wolfman) wrote and directed this odd film, stars Raymond Burr and Lon Chaney Jr.)
The Ape (Monogram Pictures 1940 B-movie starring Boris Karloff. Script adapted by Curt Siodmak. Not to be confused with 1976 3-D Korean film A*P*E*! )
The Boys From Brooklyn a.k.a. Bela Lugosi Meets A Brooklyn Gorilla (stars Bruce Mitchell and Sammy Petrillo doing a very passable Martin & Lewis imitation)
The Ape Man (A Monogram Bela Lugosi low-budget Bad Film)

The set has a 3rd disc that contains all the films for I-Pod, just drag and click. Like other sets from this distributor, the quality of the film stock used leaves something to be desired, older films may be washed-out, have film artifacts, etc. But it only costs $2-3. Several of these films such as Bela Lugosi Meets a Brooklyn Gorilla and The Gorilla (1939) DVD [Remastered Edition] are available in better editions, if you want to track them down after seeing them here.
