Movie Reviews

Good cartoons, Horrible quality

"I ordered this DVD as a christmas present since it has all the christmas cartoons from the 50s through the 80s that my girlfriend grew up watching as a kid. She still has a VHS with 2 of these on it and has more or less worn it out over the years.

There are 11 cartoons in total on the DVD: Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, The Kids In The Shoe, Jack Frost, Santa's Suprise, Peeping Penguins, Snow Foolin', Christmas Comes But Once A Year, The Stead Fast Tin Soilder, Somewhere In Dreamland, Toys Will Be Toys, and Hector's Hectic Life.

After recieving it in the mail I put it on to see how it looked and sounded, and I must say it was bad. The audio has so much hissing it is reminiscent of an old cassette tape that has been recorded on over and over from the radio. Although this is not in all places, it is much more then tolerable, especially durring quite parts. It almost drowns out the characters vocals at some parts.

As for the video, the menus are bright and colorful. Then the movie starts, again sub par. When the titles come up for some of the cartoons you can notice that they are not centered (for the ones that you can tell should be). Also on some, all of the title is not on the screen, it has been cut off. Then at occasional times there are horizontal lines running down the screen, similar to that of when you needed to use the tracking feature on a VHS machine.

It is because of all of these problems that I feel as though someone set up a video camera on a tripod, zoomed in so that you can not see the edges of the tv, and recorded them from the televison.

The box states that it has the features of "Digitally Remastered" and "Dolby Digital". Yet as I am looking at the menu, it seems like the only thing "Digitally Remastered" must have been the 3 screen shots (pictures), that they have taken from 3 of the cartoons, and placed on the menu for you to look at. They look nothing like the actual cartoon itself. I am going to take the VHS that we still have to my parents place next week for a comparison, and sadly, I think the old VHS from 1993 that has been played hundreds of times will beat out the new DVD from 2004."

"11 Classic Cartoons! The very best classic Christmas cartoons including Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, The Kids in The Shoe, Jack Frost, Santa's Surprise, Christmas Comes But Once a Year, Snow Foolin, The Steadfast Tin Soldier and Somewhere in Dreamland."
