Movie Reviews

The strength of a woman, overcoming life's hard knocks
J. J. Sigler | Paris FRANCE | 12/30/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Coco CHANEL became a courageous, confident, fiesty and brave young woman when she was orphaned after her monther died and her father left her and younger sister at a convent in France. This is a very interesting story, well directed, filmed in beautiful France which demonstrates how CoCo faced each and every hardship in her life with grace and confidence, giving her continued hope for her future. Above all the negative, jealous people, CoCo maintained her focus, her infamous style and her dignity.

A must-see for anyone interested in how CoCo Chanel started in fashion, and for young women to view ways of overcoming hardships in life."

Maclaine Plays Chanel

Amos Lassen

"Coco Chanel" is an old fashioned love story and the movie was not all what I expected to see. Shirley Maclaine is Coco and she gives a riveting performance. The role is haunting and Maclaine as the mature Chanel wears it well. Barbora (her spelling)
Bobulova plays younger Chanel and we are transported between the two actresses and fast forwards and flashbacks. In this way we cab see how the mature Coco had regrets about her past. We also get a chance to see how an orphan became a woman who changed the way women dress and managed to work her way from France to the entire world.
Chanel created the little black dress and the tweed suit and she was the epitome of style and elegance. She was a modern woman who hated clothes that restricted women and to her simple elegance, comfort and style were the most important things. She created Chanel No. 5, one of the best known perfumes in the world and her fashion was recognizable everywhere.
The film is a biopic of a woman with a sense of freedom and independence and the movie totally succeeds.

"This movie has everything! A true dramatic story - fabulous actors - fabulous fashion! Olivier Sitruk (Boye) rates right up there with Colin Firth in Pride & Prejudice!! This will always be one of my favorites - can't wait to get it!"

"I loved this movie! I couldn't wait for the DVD to come out since e-bay people were trying to sell it for more than $150!!! Amazon had the best price for this DVD. I had seen it on television a few times but only got to see part of it each time. So that's why I bought the DVD."
