Movie Reviews

Extreme Drum Set Techniques
Ed Rupp | USA | 02/05/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Great DVD, Excellent quality, Fun material - Randy Van Patten teaches his material in an easy step by step method. He slows it down so you can see and hear what he is teaching you. Randy doesn't spend time on reading music, instead you will learn tom fills, grooves and techniques Randy demonstrates for you stroke for stroke. The lessons are fast paced, professional, precise and most of all not boring. The DVD is well produced and lesson navigation is fast and easy. This DVD is NOT for the beginner drummer, it is geared more for intermediate and up. My recommendation is BUY IT, There is something in there for just about everyone! You won't be disappointed!"
Beginner to intermediate level drummer

"I enjoyed this dvd due to it's simplicity and easy to follow approach. Randy makes it easy to understand, slows things down enough so you can easily follow what he's playing and describing, and his humour makes it light-hearted too. He talks through a few tips and tricks I wasn't aware of, and explains some simple basics of the kit, grooves, techniques, ideas for fills, as well as rhythms, all at the beginner the intermediate level, so nothing too advanced. He uses a big kit, with double bass, but doesn't overdo any of it, keeps it simple so you can apply it to a 4-piece kit, and doesn't use the double bass too much, but does use it enough to show good examples.
The price is right, and definitely a good one to watch for a beginner to intermediate drummer. He keeps it interesting and worth watching."
Good overall

"overall, the dvd is worth the money I paid for it. It has a good introduction on basic exercises, and the goes on describing a few interesting fills, rhythms, etc. He's pretty funny and made the experience of drumming fun. Not the best instructional dvd for beginners, but it has a few nice features that can be relatively easy incorporated into your drumming repertoire"
This is a keeper

"Randy is a bit quirky (by his own admission) but also an accomplished drummer. This DVD is full of information and suggestions and examples. There are many very good DVDs on the subject of drumming technique including those by JoJo Mayers, Dave Weckl's stuff, Steve Smith's DVD, Matt Ritter's DVD, and Tommy Igoe (to name only a few). Randy's provides excellent examples and encourgages the viewer to experiement from there. As mentioned, this is geared more to an intermediate drummer but even beginners will be glad they watched and learned. Hey Randy, how 'bout a second DVD to follow the first?"
