Movie Reviews

Good Show, But Criminal Film-Making
Sir Grand Citizen | 06/14/1999
(4 out of 5 stars)

"I say, Watson, there is evidence here that Foetus gave a great show at CBGB's ten years ago. I have detected some exhilarating songs, manic performances, remarkable sound quality, and sterling musicianship.Of course, I had to dig deep, and peer hard through my magnifying glass. Everything fun and exciting was obscured by layer after layer of bad, pretentious editing, silly coloration tricks, and ill-advised use of negative film stocks.I was hoping the corpus delecti would be clean and bare, the culprits honest and unrepentent, as in the Case of Big Black's "Pig Pile." Those chaps came clean, by George, and gave no obfuscations or alibis. Regarding this Foetus, though--the body of evidence has been so tampered with and badly preserved that I can hardly tell what happened on that fateful night at CBGB's. And that's a real crime.Inform Scotland Yard that they will have to make room in Highgate for a number of fradulent, MTV-influenced editors and special effects hacks, to serve life sentences for ruining great art. Confidentially, I suspect Moriarti."
Love the music, not a fan of the DVD

"About the only use for this DVD is the music (which is, of course, also available on CD). Truly, the visuals are horrid. The source-material must be in VERY rough shape-- the DVD is sub-VHS quality in terms of image. As somebody who never had a chance to see any of the Foetus-incarnations perform live, I was very much looking forward to seeing what a typical show would've been like 'back-in-the-day'. This document surely isn't an accurate representation.

The sound is decent-enough. There's a 5.1 mix on here that doesn't do much to seperate the channels-- they seem to have added a bit of echoey-sound to the rear channels to simulate 'surround'.

Disappointing."
