"Garland Jeffreys is a very underrated artist. His most well-known albums are probably "Escape Artist" (1981) and "Ghost Writer" (1977), which featured "Wild in the Streets" and "35 Millimeter Dreams." Neither of those songs is featured on this concert DVD, which helps to illustrate that Garland is focusing less on his rock side here and more on his reggae, Latin, and soul sides.
This concert was filmed in 1992 in Munich, Germany, on the tour supporting Garland's then-new album, "Don't Call Me Buckwheat," which explored race relations in America. It was a big seller in Europe and the DVD features 6 songs from that album.
Garland is an excellent performer with a great, expressive voice, which really shows through here. His band is also very good. Garland really commands the stage here, and I would recommend this to anyone interested in Garland's work, especially the "Don't Call Me Buckwheat" album. My only real complaint is that the middle part of the concert drags, with too many mid-tempo songs. Also, the DVD only runs about 45 minutes, not 60 as it says above. But this DVD really showcases the "Don't Call Me Buckwheat" material. I love the segue into "What's Goin On" during "Racial Repertoire." What a voice!
Songs:
1. Moonshine in the Cornfield
2. Welcome to the World
3. Don't Call Me Buckwheat
4. I May Not Be Your Kind
5. Racial Repertoire
6. We the People
7. New York Skyline
8. The Answer
9. Hail Hail Rock 'n' Roll"
Wonderful DVD
