"Even the most loyal Hamtaro fans have shyed away from this DVD, but there's really no reason to. What can I say; the little guys are cute but they're not like sugar-coated cute, and that's what makes this such a great show for so many age groups. On this DVD, Volume 5, which was released long after Volume 6, we have three great episodes from the first season, including one that was only aired in Canada once, to my knowledge. The first episode, "Valentine's Day!", is not regularly shown on TV in Canada because of its holiday theme and has a delightful story about the Ham-Ham girls helping Auntie Viv to work up the courage to give a Valentine's gift to someone special (Elder Ham!). The second episode, "Brandy's Big Race", has Hamtaro, Boss, Oxnard and Bijou helping their dog-friend, Brandy, run a highly-competitive dog sled race through the snowy mountains. In the final episode, "Legend of the Courageous Hamtaro!" we see the first of what some fans call the 'Hamtaro fantasy episodes' where the cast is placed in storybook-type setting. Will the brave knight Hamtaro save Princess Laura's kingdom from the Evil Ham-Wizard (played by the normally good-natured Boss) ?
Overall, a great Hamtaro DVD and essential for completing the collection. Volumes 3 and 4 remain my favourites in the series, however."
