This movie was a bit of a surprise... I had to watch it a couple of times to really get full appreciation.

First, Cate Blanchett and Giovanni Ribisi have chemistry here that is quite subtle, however very plausible. Ribisi's quiet way helps Cate Blanchets charachter reconcile a gamut of grief, guilt and anger as a femme-fatale with a mission. Directed by Tom Tykwer (Run Lola Run) from a screenplay cowritten by the late Krzysztof Kieslowski (Trois Couleurs, The Double Life of Veronique), Heaven is a film with complex compassion for the power and fragility of human relationships.

This film was originally envisioned as the first part of a trilogy on Heaven, Hell, and Purgatory, so there is a big-picture thematic complexity that will leave the viewer a bit perplexed. Watch it again and the richness of the film will emerge beyond the brilliant cinematography which is a show stopper at times. Well worth watching and in my case collecting.
