i had been hearing about this film for years and thought i would never get to see it. It hadn't been played on television in decades and i am too young to have seen it in its theatrical run back in the 1950's. Well, upon viewing a rental copy recently; here are my observations on this "trash classic". This movie is cheaply made...from it's cardboard sets to ridiculous native costumes worn by guys who look no more like a native than i do, this has "cheese" written all over it. This has been referred to for years as "the walking tree stump" movie and that it is. The title creature looks like a dead tree with eyes and a mouth and is eerily similar to the talking trees in the movie "Wizard of Oz" (yes...really!) The acting by a bunch of unknowns sadly remind me of the acting i once saw in a play presented at a local grammar school by 5th graders and the plot is so contrived and stupid that i have to constantly remind myself that this film was made by a bunch of Hollywood professionals (tho i hardly believe it myself). I guess sci fi films back then were in such demand that they were cranking them out a dozen at a time and from the looks of it, most had a budget of about $5 but it looks like this one was made on half a shoestring instead.
If you can buy this movie cheaply and like some of those crappy old sci fi films like i do, then by all means get this one. Otherwise...skip it (you won't be missing much).
If it's too late and you are one of the unfortunates who has already bought it, then throw out the DVD and just stare at the cover artwork for 75 minutes. That would be more entertaining than the actual movie.
