Movie Reviews

¡ a bailar la cumbia !
Alejandra Vernon | Long Beach, California | 12/02/2004
(5 out of 5 stars)

"The 20 videos on this DVD are of lovely, mellow cumbias, all with a romantic feeling and wonderfully played by Los Angeles Azules, a group that hails from Mexico and is led by the brothers Mejia, who started out as kids in the late 70's and are one of the best interpreters of the musica tropical genre.
Their sound is heavy on the brass, with trumpet, saxophone, and trombone in the forefront, as well as a marvelous acordeón, and organ, bass, and percussion. The group has 4 singers, one of them belonging to one of the 3 women in this 10 person conjunto, and most of the songs are written by Jorge Mejia, who also does the arrangements and production.

These are rather subdued, smooth cumbias compared to some old Colombian CDs I have which are quite raucous and raunchy, making this DVD collection not only great to dance to, but to have on as background music as well.
The video format has the group performing (usually an outdoors lip-synch) interspersed with "enactments" of the songs (which are quite corny and have a charm all their own). Big favorites of mine are ""Entrega de Amor", "Al Despertar", and "Te Extraño", which has some nifty acordeón work.
The DVD "Extra" is an "Entrevista", where some of the band members have a turn with the microphone, and total running time for the videos is 70 minutes.
Song list:
1: "Entrega de amor"
2: "Como te voy a olvidar"
3: "Mi niña mujer"
4: "Te necesito"
5: "Me haces falta tu"
6: "Juventud"
7: "El liston de tu pelo"
8: "Amigos nada mas"
9: "20 rosas"
10: "Sin ti no se vivir"
11: "Por el amor de mi madre"
12: "Desde que te vi"
13: "Muchachita consentida"
14: "El baile de la ranita"
15: "El ultimo beso"
16: "Al despertar"
17: "Te extraño tanto"
18: "Dame de noche"
19: "Vestida de amor"
20: "La primera vez"
