Movie Reviews

Janet at her best, but....

"....we're still waiting for a collection featuring the vids for FEEL IT BOY, WHAT'S IT GONNA BE?, SCREAM, 24 PLAY, and a number of others. Though many of these videos are colabros with other artists, we'd still like to see them released on DVD for prosperty."
Showcasing Janet's sensual side

"By the 90's, Janet Jackson decided to do away with the all black military outfits of the Rhythm Nation era and show some skin. Love Will Never Do Without You featured the diva in nothing more than a black top and a pair of jeans that showed off her amazing figure. By the 1993 release of her janet. record, Miss Jackson ventured further into her sexy side in both her music and her videos.

That's the Way Love Goes finds Janet and some friends relaxing and swaying to the music in a loft. Keep an eye out for a then unknown J. Lo. Miss Jackson and her dancers show off some spicy moves in a voyeuristic Asian club and the sweet ballad Again reminiscing about a past lover (played by actor Gary Dourdan). The steamy Any Time, Any Place takes the commandment "love thy neighbor as thyself" very literally. It's intensely erotic without being sleazy. J and her girlfriends tease some guys while crossing through the desert in You Want This. Because of Love is kind of boring with close-ups of Janet happily singing to the song and shots from her tour.

Got 'til It's Gone is one of the most creative videos I've ever seen. Mixing African and African American cultures of the 60's and 70's, Janet plays a lounge singer crooning to a crowd of cheerful and free people. I'm probably in the minority, but I really dig her hair. Together Again shows humans and animals living side by side harmoniously in a lush utopia and a cool shot of Janet hugging and almost comforting herself. The video for the Deeper Remix is softer and more reflective of loved ones lost to AIDS. The futuristic I Get Lonely is my favorite of the Velvet Rope videos. Shots include Janet riding in back of a car with rain dripping down the window, walking down a long hallway, caressing a male mannequin (sounds weird, but it plays into the song's message), and performing a routine with her dancers while donning men's suits. Go Deep is the house party daydream of a male fan, You mirrors her high energy Velvet Rope performance, and she's partially nude while swimming in the beautiful video for Every Time.

All For You is a straight up dance video with Miss Janet spotting a guy on a subway. I hate the remix for Someone To Call My Lover, but the video's cute with Janet driving down a country video and hanging out at a juke joint. I also prefer the original version of Son of a Gun, but seeing Janet play voodoo tricks on a no good man make me laugh everytime I see it.

If the whole Super Bowl scandal hadn't happened I think the song and video for I Want You would've done better. It's simple with Janet just cruising through the neighborhood on her way to see her man at night. All Nite (Don't Stop) is another sexy clip shot in an abandoned hotel. I could do without the live performance of Just A Little While. It's not that good, but the extras are nice with an interview with Ryan Seacrest and a behind the scenes look at the making of the Damita Jo album.

The dvd isn't perfect (where are Runaway, Twenty Foreplay, and Doesn't Really Matter?), but it's still worth the purchase. Pick it up, I say."
