Movie Reviews

Too little of Junior of Wells but still worth owning.

"I just finally got around to watching this live DVD, only to be slightly disappointed.

The DVD footage is taken from the 'Chicago Blues Jam' TV series. It's 80min long, but only features Junior and his band for only about 20mins.

But there are performances by Hubert Sumlin & the Big Four, Chicago bluesmen Pistol Pete & Roy Hytower, and Rod Pizza & The Mighty Flyers.

Junior does smoke on harp and his segment is good. The segment with Hubert, playing a ESP Strat, is good. I skipped most of Pistol Pete & Roy Hytower, they do the regular blues standards.

The highlight of the DVD, IMO, is Rod Pizza & The Mighty Flyers' set. Pizza and the Mighty Flyers have won a couple Handy Awards for 'Best Live Blues Band' and you can see why on this DVD.

Pizza and the band are in great form and rock the house. We've opened for them a couple of times and they were always great. Their performance alone is the worth the cost of the DVD.

NOT ALL JUNIOR BUT STILL GREAT

"This was recorded at Buddy Guy's Legends Club in Chicago, with great 5.1 surround sound. I think overall this is some great footage, Junior does the first four which are fantastic. Then Pistol Pete & Roy Hytower do three excellent tunes, good old Hubert Sumlin & The Big Four do the next three songs. And for the end we get to see Rod Piazza & The Mighty Flyers on the last four, they were also good. Pistol Pete & Roy Hytower are new to me, and I found them both to be excellent artists. There are some nice songs all the way through out the dvd, also the time is not bad eighty seven minute. So I would say a fair rating would be four to four and a half stars, well worth seeing."
