Movie Reviews

Unauthorized - Better Than I Thought It Would Be
Dean | Australia | 03/27/2002
(4 out of 5 stars)

"OK, first things first. I was NOT going to buy this DVD simply because of the people who released it - If it was going to be anything like the "KISS - Rock & Roll Legends" DVD, then I wasn't going to touch it with a 30 foot clown pole. I've enjoyed many other KISS DVD's in the past (Including enjoyable BOOTLEG VHS tapes) So I gave it a lot of thought, knowing that there is no official KISS music in it... That wouldn't bother me too much. Just as long as the footage is fun to watch (Once again, Unlike the footage in "Rock & Roll Legends" - 44mins of watching the same boring camera angle from the same damn interview) So I checked out the reviews on Amazon.com to see if I could get any help. Heh... no such luck. - The guys that bought the VHS version were all UNHAPPY, the guys who bought the DVD version were HAPPY with this release. So who was I going to believe?????? Who cares!!!!!!!! Nobody knows your tastes better than yourself, and if you ARE a KISS fan, then you should like this DVD for the archival footage. The reason I needed to hear what other people said , was because I wanted to know what I would be paying for on the actual DVD. I wanted to make sure it wasn't just the same interview over and over, with the same line-up over and over. Nobody helped with that stuff, and most importantly I WANTED TO KNOW THE RUNNING TIME!!! I wasn't going to pay that much for a 30 or 40 min DVD again. The back of the package doesn't even say how long it runs for. There are no real technical details on Amazon's(US) page either - so I checked Amazon.com(UK) and they said it runs for 55 Mins. So I said, that's fairly decent enough - I'll get it. When I took the CD out of the pack, I was even happier to see that it said:- Running Time 90mins printed on the cd :) .... Oh yeah, they lied - it only ran for about 55 mins :(REAL DETAILS:
*Running time: About 55Mins (The CD itself says 90mins?? Why?)
*Lots of varied footage (Not the same interviews over and over)
News Clips, Interviews, Events, Signing Sessions.
*Lots of different line-ups (Fans of the 70's, 80's and 90's KISS should be pretty happy)
*There is no KISS music - although the guitar music that IS played throughout the DVD seems to be very very similar to the tunes from "Audio Dog" (Bruce Kulick's new solo CD). Maybe it's an unofficial guitarist playing disguised tunes from the Audio Dog album? There ARE definitely some familiar Kulick tunes in this DVD.... I wonder if he knows about this? This is a great DVD if you want archival KISS footage and don't mind watching below average video quality (It may be DVD, but they're amateur fan clips - still cool to watch though).
Now if you want to watch first class footage WITH music clips thrown in, you should check out "KISS: Exposed" - I'm dying to get that one:)"
Very Disappointed

"I bought this tape being a true kiss fan and was very disappointed. It was something I could have lived without seeing. If you love their music, this tape IS NOT for you. They don't even play KISS music throughout the video. The only music you hear is a ridiculous guitar jam (on and on and on). I know that Kiss did not give permission for this tape and that is a good thing. I feel that they wouldn't ruin their magic with the fans by putting out this Piece Of Junk. My recomendation is to save your money, wish I did."

KISS Unauthorized: A "Backstage" View
Brian Shaller | Bronx, NY USA | 03/21/2001
(3 out of 5 stars)

"KISS: Unauthorized is a must-own for KISS fanatics. Although there are few clips of KISS performing live, this DVD is loaded with cool footage of the band (the late lineup: Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Bruce Kulick, and Eric Singer, and the original lineup: Gene, Paul, Peter Criss, and Ace Freliley) at record signings, on TV shows being interviewed, at the conventions, and even setting up for a performance. Some great moments are Ace Freliey's induction into the Rock and Roll walk of fame, and KISS appearing outside in full makeup and costume for a 'press conferrence.' Definitely worth seeing, but probably not something you'd watch many, many times!"
