Movie Reviews

Not Unlike The Wicker Man
Brian Lueth | Chicago, IL United States | 09/11/2009
(4 out of 5 stars)

"I really enjoyed Left Bank as it reminded me a great deal of Robin Hardy's chilling film, The Wicker Man. If a tense, slow-moving film that carefully weaves pagan tradition, the supernatural and the female reproductive cycle sounds like your thing, I cannot recommend Left Bank enough. It does take its time building tension but Eline Kuppens delivers a captivating performance as Marie and, let's be honest, the pay-off makes the wait worthwhile. I'm sure you've heard that before but this succeeds in the finale where most films fail.

While watching this film I had a distinct feeling creep over me that I'd not felt in quite some time...fear. Marie's ever-worsening wound, the black pool, pagan sacrifice...unnerving stuff.

I plan to purchase Left Bank, in my opinion it was that good. As I'd mentioned above, it shared quite a few similarities to The Wicker Man and I absolutely love that film. Granted there's no outburst of singing or anything like that here but pagan terror and raw sexuality do abound and I'm just so tired of horror cinema holding my hand. It's refreshing to see intelligent horror again."

Interesting concept

"I absolutely love the concept of this movie. I also like how they focused more on character development and symbolism rather than in-your-face shocks or gore. The slow burn to the payoff is definitely worth it!"
