Superb Recital in Beautiful La Scala
Milda Ruffo | Mount Royal, Quebec Canada | 02/12/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This DVD is just great. Daniel Barenboim plays the all-Liszt program with such great feeling that I got goose bumps listening to him. The repertoire, all favourites of mine and very difficult to play, starts with pieces from "Annees de pelerinage, deuxieme annee: Italie" Sonetto 47, 104 and 123 and Apres une lecture de Dante. Fantasia quasi sonata. Then, from Legendes: "St. Francois d'Assise. La predication aux oiseaux" and concludes with concert transcriptions from the operas, namely "Aida: Danza sacra e duetto finale", "Miserere du Trovatore. Paraphrase de concert" and "Rigoletto. Paraphrase de concert". The whole concert is very well filmed, showing off the Teatro alla Scala as well as the performer. Add to all this superb sound and you know this DVD is a must have. When the audience burst into applause I nearly did myself!"
Delightful and delicate pianism

"I bought this set along with the Beethoven Piano Concertos which Barenboim presented with his Staatskapelle Berlin. I found that set to be very satisfying musically. It was wonderful to watch a master pianist at work and directing his orchestras from the keyboard. The Steinway and Sons piano delivered a clean and clear sound and with Barenboim's playing, it was great.

Coming to the Liszt recital, it was totally worlds apart. Delicate and subtle playing conveyed with the right amount of warmth was apparent. Bareboim was like a kid in love with the music and the ending of each piece was met with approval from the audience. You could almost hear a pin drop. That was the level of attentiveness given by the audience in La Scala's venerable opera house which Barenboim is set to take on the Principal Guest Conductor's position.
