"This is all very well done. Harnoncourt is one of the best Strauss conductors alive, and the Vienna Philharmonic can play this stuff in their sleep, though they're wide awake here. When these musicians are in a groove it's Viennese swing. The DVD is a different version and better version than the PBS broadcast, which is rather dumbed down. Here, you get complete performances with only occasional extra-musical interruptions. No host, thank god."

This is a pleasant concert

"Frankly I do not understand the reviewer who was "down" on this DVD. The concert was a pleasing as were the 10 others or so I have of the new year's concert series. The orchestra and conducter worked well together. They went a bit beyond Strauss and explored some of the other light repetore. I am impressed, as usual, by Brian Large. I have found over the years that anything that involves Mr Large as the video director is first class -- this DVD is no exception. This is not my first choice from the Vienna Philharmonic New Year's concert series (Willie Boskovosky and karjon would be my first choice) but it is credible and reasonably priced"
