Movie Reviews

Swinging Stuff
S J Buck | Kent, UK | 04/19/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Starting with a drum solo (which is short) by Jimmie Smith, the concert begins with a swinging version of "This Can't Be Love". After the tune Davis plays a typically agressive solo which is almost worth the price of the DVD on its own. The rest of the DVD is of similar quality!

Eddie Lockjaw Davis played with Basie on the 'Atomic Mr Basie' album, and if 20 years later he's lost any of his verve and attack I really couldn't tell. The peerless rhythm section is Ray Brown on Bass and Oscar Peterson on Piano.

The rest of the tunes they play are:
I Wished Upon A Moon
The Breeze and I
Angel Eyes
Telegraph
Land of Dreams
Blue Lou

For the 1970's the sound quality is good, and to see film of these Jazz giants in colour playing (without interruption) is something I never thought I would see. Get the whole whole series....

Another great Norman Granz DVD

"This series is in color, well done with great audio.
We have a crew that is as good as it gets. Eddie Davis,
Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown, and Jimmy Smith. This alone
is an endorsement. These guys are cranking out tunes
and making it look sooo easy. When your'e this good, it
is easy. These guys love what they do, and you can see
it and hear it."
