3 DVD Box Set Sampling Fine Verdi Singing from Maestro Pavar
RAWoFFtheWaLL | Williamsport, PA USA | 11/08/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Would the words, "Pavarotti Sings Verdi" mean anything but an exquisite product? Here we have the voice of Luciano Pavarotti featured in three of his finest roles and finest performances at the Metropolitan Opera, New York. The operas sampled include: Ernani, an earlier work in the Verdi cannon that suits Luciano's voice excellently, Il Trovatore, this was my least favorite of the three because the production offers little for the singers which is made much worse considering the limited acting abilites of the principals and a shuddering, squeaking Eva Marton as Leonora, and finally Un Ballo in Maschera which Maestro Pavarotti often has stated was one of his most favorite roles and in this DVD you can truly see why. Luciano moves, acts, and performs his role just as well as he sings it and he is the center of attention in this opera, so the great deal of singing required of the tenor encompases all the best of Luciano and we even get a dose of comedy as well! The casts save Marton as Leonora were vocally and in most cases dramatically excellent and included: Leona Mitchell, Aprile Millo, Dolora Zajick, Sherrill Milnes, Leo Nucci, and Ruggero Raimondi to name a few. These are some of my favorite performances of Luciano Pavarotti on disc. I highly reccomend buying this box set in addition to the "Pavarotti Sings Italian Opera" set and his other performances of Un Ballo in Maschera, L'Elisir d'Amore, and La Boheme on DVD. I believe these three works represent the core of what mad Luciano Pavarotti a unique and very special artist."
