Nice Takeoff

"I started watching Trinity Blood on Adult Swim a few saturdays ago like a bunch of other people and I am finally ready to put down my take on it. I have to admit that I knew very little about this series before I started watching it. It did catch my attention when I heard rumors about it but I didn't think it would be this deep. The very first episode starts off a little soft and quiet but assuring that something not so gentle is lurking. A very hungry priest named Abel Nightroad sent by the Vatican on some business is getting set for what would seem like a regular flight but notice that there's hardly anyone on the plane and boy are they lucky.

Ok the plane is taken over by a vampire which is no surprise because the anime is about vampire's walking among men and trying to feed off of humanity but the real surprise is what that vampire is there for and how Abel stops him. Now this is where the really good action comes in because Abel not only surprises viewers but also he surprises the vampire that thinks he knows everything that's going on. Abel is a shy and kind man that is holding a huge secret. The background story is kind of mediocre, hundreds of years ago a war between mankind ended leaving only some surviving and one being the Vatican and now mysterious beings (vampires) are creeping out of the darkness. Though the background is a bit weak the main character (Abel) and the characters to come are guaranteed to surpass it and make an promising story. I think that Trinity Blood has major potential to be great and hopefully it stays that way in the future episodes.

One thing that is making me a bit nervous with this series is after episode one the action is missing but it could just be those episodes or at least I hope. Trinity Blood actually reminds me of Chrono Crusade and Hellsing but not as good yet. The animation is sure to remind you of the two series too but with a little bit of a different touch on the action scenes. The animation style helps the action a lot to give it its own unique look and it stands out.

Contains episodes 1-4:
Flight Night
Witch Hunt
The Star of Sorrow 1 - City of Blood
The Star of Sorrow 2 - Hunter's Banquet

DVD Features: Director Interview, Cast Auditions, Cultural & Historical Facts, Concept Art."

"
The boy pope.

His sister the cardinal.

The evil, bloodthirsty primate of Rome.

Women bishops/priests.

Super vampire priest, killer of vampires.

What I'm getting at is how the potential of this series, combined with the obviously expensive animation, is completely over-ridden by its incredulous premise. The clergy are weak, emotional, and sadly pathetic, especially in there complete lack of faith and dependence on their ongoing conflict with the vampires. The only redeeming character is Fr Abel, who doesn't really seem to be much of a priest, or much of a warrior, until he starts spitting out power release percentages, very similar to Alucard on Hellsing.

I might have stuck with it past this first disk, but the characters in Rome are so nauseating that I'd rather not watch them bumble around any more. And the android priest has got to be one of the most poorly contrived characters I've ever seen (or heard).

Most of the voice actors are sub par, but Abel's is pretty good.

The Bottom Line: Skip it. There's much better anime out there.

"Anime shows have tendency at times to sometimes resemble, heck even borrow from other shows. Given the sheer amount of anime produced each year its hard not to be influenced by or even create ideas similar to product already on the market. Trinity Blood is one of the latest shows produced by studio Gonzo and based on popular novels by Sunao Yoshida. In an attempt to create a season long running show based on the numerous novels in the series, creators attempt to quickly introduce the rich world of Trinity Blood and its large cast.

Trinity Blood's setting is in a future where humans and vampires are at war. The Vatican is the head of the human world with various kingdoms here and there. Main character Abel Nightshade is humble worker for the vatican. He is bumbling, slightly incompetent and always broke. He is also the next step in evolution- a vampire who feeds on other vampires and thus he is extremely powerful.

The first few episodes quickly introduce the characters, set up the tensions internally in the vatican and begin building the first of two major story arcs in which vampires have preyed on humans and Abel has to bring them to justice.

I really wanted to like Trinity Blood. Visually the show is another amazing show from GOnzo. Having said that I like my serious anime to be serious and my comedic stuff to be funny. I dont like the main character in a serious show to have a high pitched Mister Rogers type personality and to do double duty as comic relief (see first episode where he whines about being hungry and ends up having rice on his head).

Thumbs down go to Funimation for their English script. Its challenging work to write dialog for animation where you have to match words to mouth movements. The script here is laughably bad and totally juvenile. In the first episode one of the evil vampires seizes control of a giant airship. Having seen all this action transpire the character belts out "Muahaha!! I am in control of this hulking behemoth!" The whole show dun sounds like a episode of Speed Racer.

The Japanese language track make the show slightly better- only slightly.

With the number of great anime shows out there its a shame that all the hype about Trinity Blood may cause better shows to get overlooked.

I recommend Ergo Proxy, the new release of Gunbuster or even Coyote Ragtime show out of the current crop of anime shows being released."
