Los Van Van Live
03/01/2004
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I have seen LVV perform live half a dozen time but this was their best concert.
The group and its fans had to go through a living hell to perform in Miami. Some right wing groups in Miami went as far as to promise to film anybody who went to the concert and make their identities public as "Communist sympathizers". Before the concert, demonstrators shouted "communists, prostitutes and son-of-bitc***" to the concert goers. Afterwards, they threw rocks, bottles and eggs.
But the concert made it all worth while!
Los Van Van showed a vitality and emotion that had disappeared from a group that has performed for over 30 years. Unfortunately, due to political decisions, they have not been able to perform again in Miami (or now, anywhere in the U.S.)
This DVD and accompanying CD's is a most have to anyone interested in Cuban music."

"It's a shame that a few frustrated cheap old decrepit ignorant politicians in Miami tried to boycott the Van Van Concert in the Miami Arena. The Van Van group made an effort to come in good nature as invited guest to the U.S. (Miami) and play to the Cuban audience, the rest of the Latin population, and to set the record straight "that Son, and Son Montuno is from Cuba, and they are better than the commercial name Salsa given by other countries who tried to imitate and claim the Cuban music as their own" If you were not in the concert buy this DVD. The musicians are remarkably good; the music is great with the participation of the audience that was extraordinary good! All songs are from the beginning of the foundation of the band and include current ones too! Also you will hear the real interpretations of the true Cuban songs you here all the time played by other foreign Latin bands who try to get credit for it. This visit by these excellent Cuban musicians (DVD) is a must for any serious musicologist who is interested in the true origins of what some erroneously call Salsa, and even though the political atmosphere have tried to isolate the Island from the rest of the world, the Cuban music is recognized throughout all continents of the planet and it's stronger and better than ever. I know because, I have traveled all over Eastern Europe. It's our music and our heritage! I highly recommend it.
