Movie Reviews

Disappointing

"I have the Water Dog DVD and Book and purchased the Game Dog DVD and book. The book for both is outstanding. The Game DOG and Water DVD is the same video on DVD. Do not waste your dollars and purchase both DVD's. It is a waste of good money. Purchase Game Dog only. I have not seen Gun Dog but wanted something more with Upland dog training. Maybe Gun dog is the trick."
Great Instructional Video

"If you want to train a waterfowl retriever. This DVD is all you need. I have read almost all his books, specifically Water Dog twice. This DVD covers all the basics and beyond."
Outstanding Tool

"Really good and informative. Lots of info especially how to go step by step... Would have given a five but I think this DVD shows older dogs for training examples rather than dogs that should be puppies."
Painful to watch..Buy the book

"I have never reviewed a product that I have bought on Amazon before, but I feel compelled to help save those who follow the "movie is better than the book" mentality on this one.
I have read Water Dog the book numerous times. It has to be the best training manual for labrador retrievers on the market, even though it was written about 30 years ago. That being said; I figured that since the book is so amazing, the video would be able to provide some additional, visual insight b/c the book's pictures lacked in clarity. I couldn't have been more incorrect. I feel ripped off. I watched the first 15-20 minutes or so and had to turn it off b/c it was so annoying....and this is coming from a trainer(me) who greatly appreciates any useful information that can help perfect my art.

You might ask, Why is it annoying? To be somewhat respectful to the creator of this video, the main actor lacked the presence to deliver an effective message...that was put very nicely... Also, to reiterate, you will learn nothing more in this video than you learned from the book. That is, unless you do not understand how to speak to a dog or are not familiar with what a dog looks like, etc....... For example, there is about a 1 minute section of this video that shows you how to tell a puppy to "Be Quiet". This minute consists of "the actor" teaching us how to say the word "quiet". The other lessons were nearly as useless and the previously mentioned.

If you cannot stand to read the book, and feel you must learn from a DVD, buy the 'retriever fever' dvd series. I have watched the advanced volumes of this series in the past, and I currently own the 'Puppy' edition. Although a little pricy, it is very much worth the money...if you don't want to read Water Dog."
