The Christmas tale of an alcoholic
Richard J. Brzostek | New England, USA | 06/10/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"To me, Polish cinema is about the quality of stories created for us. Many Polish films may not have the big budgets of Hollywood productions, but they more than make up for this with their powerful storylines. Forgo the fluff and special effects, without a meaningful plot you have very little worth watching.

"Zolty Szalik" is a perfect example of just such a film. Although it is not en epic with fancy costumes, it is a captivating and dramatic movie, providing real insight into the life of an alcoholic.

We are thrust into this man's world and get to look at his attempts to better his life and to witness his failures. Although it is a sad story, the film is worth watching as the dangers of alcoholism are portrayed in a realistic way.

With a running time of just over an hour, "Zolty Szalik" effectively captures your emotions and takes you on a ride into the life of an alcoholic that has both moments of despair and hope.
