Movie Reviews

The Rose Technique (aka "Deranged")
Wallace Cooper | USA | 01/14/2004
(1 out of 5 stars)

"This independent feature film stars: JoBeth Williams, Sally Kirkland, Leo Rossi, Robert Constanzo, Kari Wuhrer, Jason Brooks, Anicka Haywood, Sage Kirkpatrick, Peter Jason, Denice Duff, Gibby Brand, Kevin Brief, and Nicholas Read.A weak directorial debut for Jon C. Scheide, the credibility of this choppy disjunct movie falls apart at its ridiculous conclusion. Overall, this film was shot well by veteran cinematographer Mark Woods, but at times it looks like the production was rushed and the picture isn't as polished as it should have been (the boom shadow is even visible in one scene). There are a few gems in this film, most notably the scenes with comic actor Bobby Costanzo. Leo Rossi and Kari Wuhrer (pre Eight-Legged) add some more humor to this film. It's unfortunate that Costanzo/Rossi have no real scenes together, as they have proven to be a great duo in other independents. This film is worth watching as there are a few good chuckles, but overall Deranged comes off as too mild to be a comedy or a thriller."
