Though missing many of the book's scenes, and lacking the slow-build mystery feel of the book (the blatant reveal comes pretty early in the film), it succeeds as a compressed and nicely visualized version.

Seeing the characters and settings from the book come to life was satisfying, and the child and adult actors were all quite good.

VERDICT: 3.5+ stars, or maybe 4+ if you haven't read the book.

For those who usually avoid science fiction: there are no blatant sci-fi elements here, except that this is sort of an alternate version of reality where medical science took a different turn in the 1950s-80s. It's more "speculative" fiction than sci-fi.

The extras include (among other things) some comments by the book's author, which I found interesting.

I had heard other negative reviews from some acquaintances, but decided to give it a try anyway. If you'd like to watch a beautifully crafted film about humanity, love, and friendship, this is the ticket. This went right to my keeper shelf. :)

This movie could basically be summed up "Life sucks & then you die." it was horribly defeatist & depressing. SPOILER basically the kids are all being raised to become organ donors. For the same premise with an optimistic, action-filled characters-you-actually-like feel, try The Island instead. I generally love Keira K. & she did a great job playing her pathetic character but this movie was so devoid of anything uplifting or redeeming or even MEANINGFUL, my friend & I had to watch another movie to purge the black mood it put us in!
