Movie Reviews

A Low Rent "Glengarry Glen Ross" Devolves Into Standard Acti
K. Harris | Las Vegas, NV | 11/14/2006
(2 out of 5 stars)

""Suckers" is an interesting, if not very accomplished, picture about the business of selling cars. Loaded with testosterone, this movie starts out as a low rent version of "Glengarry Glen Ross" (minus the great dialogue). We see the ruthlessness and the sleaze of one particular dealership as our cutthroat salesman will do anything to close a deal for maximum profit. Much of the movie is focused on Daniel Benzali as the man in charge. He gives frequent "pep" talks and motivates his staff to be heartless, cunning, and manipulative to outwit prospective buyers. These portions of the film are definitely the most interesting, and Benzali is a forceful--if not particularly likable--presence. Her performs the same function (in much the same way) that the Alec Baldwin character did in the movie version of "Glengarry" by setting up a competitive sales competition.

Based on the dealership aspect alone, this would have been a pretty intriguing film. But "Suckers" also throws in a few more standard B-movie conventions. We've got one salesman being threatened by loansharks, another involved in the drug trade, and a couple of superfluous sex scenes for the sake of nudity. By the time we near the end, the film has lost all interest in the dealership to go out with a big confrontational shoot-out. Very standard, and not very believable.

"Suckers" is harmless enough. Probably geared more for a male audience, I can imagine some people enjoying this picture--although, for me, it's appeal was somewhat limited. KGHarris, 11/06."
Let's do away with humane notions and sell some cars
Ken Jensen | Kingston, NY | 03/24/2008

"This movie is merciless. It takes all the things we hate about used car salesmen and exponentially elevates it to epic proportions. 100% cold hearted sales goals being met no matter what the cost. I soaked myself in the vicious comedy like a warm bath after a hard day. One of my all time favorite comedies due to theme."
New Car Dealer

"This film would have been better if they had stuck to the topic of everyday happenings at a dealership. The stupid inner drama of murder, drugs and gangsters would be better in a Soprano episode. But if you can watch the first 45 minutes and forget the rest, some of the characters especially the sales manager will offer the viewer a funny look what a bad dealer is. Thank goodness this is not the case of today's dealers."
If you sell cars, you will love this movie

"I work in the car biz, and one of the older guys here recommended this movie. So I searched Amazon for it, and surely enough there it was. This is a hilarious movie. It was just like the place I work. We aren't as mean as they were, but the same hilarity occurs. I'd recommend this to anyone who works in the car biz, and even anyone who's bought a car."
