Movie Reviews

Great Horror Anthology
Stephen B. O'Blenis | Nova Scotia, Canada | 10/19/2005
(4 out of 5 stars)

""Twists Of Terror" is a movie featuring three distinct segments, very loosely tied together by a narator and a penchant for twists within the individual tales. As I'm writing this I see that it's unavailable at the moment, but hopefully Amazon will get some new copies in within a couple of days, because Halloween is right around the corner and a movie like this would make a really great part of a viewing night right during Golden Season for us horror fans.

Given the short nature of each story told, each tale springs from a simple premise and then proceeds to tell itself with near-maximum effectiveness. You can't really say too much about segments of this length, but for a brief idea of what's here:

"The People You Meet" (starring Jennifer Rubin of "A Nightmare On Elm Street 3", "Screamers", and "The Crush") tells of a married couple reconciling at a romantic dinner at a fine restaraunt, and then proceeding to encounter vicious terror on the ride through the dark forest home. By Far the scariest of the chapters. "The Clinic" has a man's car breaking down and him seeking refuge at an out-of-the way clinic that seems from the start somehow sinister; the most viscerally gruesome chapter. "Stolen Moments" - a suspense/horror take on the dating game - is the most sexual chapter, with both female and male exposure to keep both guy and girl viewers happy; it succsessfully melds some contrasting styles.

A few other recommended horror anthologies: "Campfire Tales" (1997) - totally excellent; I'd do a writeup on it following this one but, even though I just saw it in the late 90s, I find I for some reason can't recall parts of it as well as I usually can with recent movies (must watch again soon!); both "Creepshow"s (especially the second, in my opinion); "Nightmares" from 1983, and the Stephen King "Cat's Eye" just to name a quick few."
